Giving adult learners a voice after the inquest: A review of a mixed method approach to educational research
(2009)
Conway, Ann
Achomaireacht:
<p>This paper highlights the necessary application of mixed methods in educational research within the field of adult learners and lifelong learning in higher education to provide adult learners with a “voice”. The paper will introduce the reader to educational research through focusing on mixed methods and the theoretical frameworks within. Critical hermeneutic epistemology or transformative research (as espoused by Freire and Habermas in critical realism cited in Morrow and Torres, (2002)), social constructivism within phenomenology (see Vygotsky’s (1934) and Bruner (1996) work cited in Carlile and Jordan, 2005: 21-22) and pragmatism within the critical realism school (The Chicago School of biographical studies were grounded in pragmatism (West et al, 2007)) will be reviewed as examples of methodologies in the theoretical frameworks within mixed methods. This will then introduce the reader to some types of research methods used within mixed methods such as case study intervi...

Disciplinary Identity of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research- A Study of Postgraduate Researchers’ Experiences
(2012)
Chari, Deepa Nathamuni; Howard, Robert; Bowe, Brian
Achomaireacht:
<p>Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research although growing at very fast rate, its disciplinary identity remains ‘ill-defined’. It is often viewed as multidisciplinary; and/or interdisciplinary science or even as a unique discipline on its own way. As a consequence, whether this growing research area requires researchers that have studied specialised undergraduate or postgraduate nanoscience and nanotechnology programmes; or traditional science and engineering disciplines is still less understood. The examination of postgraduate researchers’ experiences of nanoscience and nanotechnology research can provide a way of understanding nanoscience and nanotechnology research and the associated forms of disciplinarity, which in turn can address what the type of graduates are required to work in this area. In this paper, we review the different forms of disciplinarity associated with nanoscience and nanotechnology research and demonstrate that disciplinary identity of nanoscience and ...

Identifying The Knowledge, Skills and Competences for Nanoscience And Nanotechnology Research
(2011)
Chari, Deepa Nathamuni; Howard, Robert; Bowe, Brian
Achomaireacht:
<p>Nanoscience and nanotechnology research has influenced the research activities in various scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, molecular biology and biotechnology. The postgraduate researchers working on nanoscience and nanotechnology related research projects in any of these scientific disciplines experience the world of nanoscience and nanotechnology research closely. The examinations of the postgraduate researchers’ lived experiences can certainly unfold the characteristics of nanoscience research as experienced by the researchers themselves and can further illuminate the knowledge, skills and competences required to successfully undertake this research.</p>

The Design and validation of a low-cost mobile robotic testbed supporting path planning, team building and string stability research
(2012)
Johnson, Michael
Achomaireacht:
This thesis presents the design and development of a low-cost testbed for distributed mobile robotic research, its validation in both the academic research and educational spaces and the application of this development platform to the emerging eld of string stability in order to propose an a ordable research tool for localisation, education, path following and automatic convoy formation research and development. Despite the increase in available robotic platforms and associated enabling technologies such as localisation and communication, there exists a requirement for an a ordable generic testbed that will facilitate entry into the distributed mobile robotic research space. This thesis addresses this shortcoming by presenting the design and validation of a distributed mobile robotic testbed which facilitates research and development. The development and realisation of the closed-loop mobile robotic testbed, complete with oor area, localisation and communications support, is prese...

A framework for classifying and comparing architecture-centric software evolution research
(2013)
Jamshidi, Pooyan; Ghafari, Mohammad; Aakash, Ahmad; Pahl, Claus
Achomaireacht:
Architecture-centric software evolution (ACSE) supports frequent business and technical change cycles in software at higher abstraction levels. This requires evolution in system structure and behavior that could be modeled, analyzed and evolved in a formal way. Existing research and practices comprises a wide spectrum of evolution-centric research in terms of processes, frameworks and empirical studies to tackle ACSE. However, there is no unified framework providing systematic insight into classification and comparison for state-of-the-art in ACSE research. We present a taxonomic scheme that provides a basis for an extensive classification and comparison of existing ACSE research approaches - leading to a reflection on areas of future research. Our search covers 8 major research databases, resulting in 4138 papers searched and 60 peer-reviewed papers considered for data collection. We then performed a systematic mapping based on a quantitative and qualitative extraction of the incl...

Achomaireacht:
<p>This paper offers case studies from two Irish Higher Education Institutions on the benefits and challenges of using on-line databases and application processes to recruit students to community-engaged research projects. We briefly introduce the principles of Community-Based Research (CBR), showing how this pedagogy allows students to collaborate with underserved community partners and not-for-profit organisations on real-life research projects, preparing them for the workplace, and enhancing their college experience. Staff in University College Cork (UCC) and Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) use digital resources to offer students the opportunity to browse live research topics, suggested to us by communities, on our websites, along with application forms and process maps for community-based research projects. In this paper we draw on our respective years’ experience of coordinating community-based research (also known as science shop) programmes in DIT (Students Learnin...

Open learning: an action research study of Digital, Galway
(1994)
O'Neill, John
Achomaireacht:
Open learning is a relatively new form of training / learning which is being utilised by organisations. One such organisation is Digital Equipment International (Galway), who (in conjunction with Dublin City University) commissioned some research to evaluate open learning within the organisation, and to provide recommendations for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the open learning system. The research strategy chosen was that of action resea rch , since the research needed to be both relevant to the needs of the organisations and contribute to the field of open learning research. The research undertaken was iterative in nature and involved: (i) an ongoing literature review; (ii) a review of organisational practice (including a telephone survey of twenty-four Irish organisations); (iii) extensive internal research in Digital. Five critical success factors for the implementation and running of an open learning system were identified from literature and organisational pr...

Fisheries Research Centre
Achomaireacht:
This combined annual Report for the years 1994 and 1995 span a critical period in the history of the Fisheries Research Centre. During 1994 the funding support from the EC STRIDE Initiative came to an end, having achieved a notable and wholly innovative impact on marine R&D activities in Ireland. The scientific undertakings at the core of the STRIDE Programme have been maintained through a number of contract research positions at the FRC, where they continue to make a critical contribution to Irish marine science. The year 1995 marked the culmination of almost a century of fisheries related research carried out under the direct control of the Government Service, having been initiated in 1900 by the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland. On 1 January 1996 the Fisheries Research Centre transferred to the Marine Institute, and thus this FRC Report is the first to be published under the new masthead. The future of Irish marine research, and in particular th...

RICHE was the response to a call under HEALTH-2009-3.3-5, with the title of 'European child health research platform'. The call text asked us to “address the diversity and fragmentation in child health research in Europe in an inclusive multidisciplinary way, identifying existing research programmes in Member States, recent advances and identification of gaps to explore road maps for the future of child health research in Europe”. Project structure A consortium, with a final total of 23 partners, and two associate (i.e. unfunded) partners, responded to this call. We designed a project with a linear structure, where the main focus of activity moved from work on the Inventory, and Indicators and Measurement, in Year 1, to work on Gaps in Year 2, finishing with the preparation of the Roadmap in year 3. The final 6 months (Year 4) were largely dissemination. The Platform, which is instantiated in our website, supported all of the other parts,, and was a focus for communicatio...

The therapy professions make up a significant and growing proportion of the health-care workforce in Ireland. In December 2008 the Therapy Advisory Unit of the Department of Health and Children (DoHC, 2008b) published A Research Strategy for the Therapy Professions. One of its strategic goals was to ensure that the therapy professions have a clear direction for their research activities. This study addresses this strategic goal by using the Delphi research technique to identify agreed research priorities for each of six Irish therapy professions: (i) physiotherapy, (ii) occupational therapy, (iii) podiatry, (iv) speech and language therapy, (v) nutrition and dietetics, and (vi) orthoptics. This was achieved through gaining agreement on what these priorities should be from the professionals themselves as well as from key stakeholders and service users. Alongside the top 20 research priorities for each of these responding groups, seven recurrent themes were identified. These were: (i...

The aim of my paper today is to explore some of the tensions between 'practical' and theoretical issues involved in applied social analysis. I try to accomplish this aim by reflecting on an applied research project on demographic trends and housing need in Northern Ireland (Heenan, Gray and Paris, 1994). I do not simply summarise that project, however, but use it as the base from which to raise some wider issues which confront researchers and policy makers working in applied social research. The rest of this paper is in five parts. Section 2 introduces the applied research study and outlines some of its main results. Section 3 identifies the strategic housing policy context within which the research was undertaken. Section 4 focuses on some of the research issues involved in analysing demographic change. Section 5 explores the relationships between demographic analysis and public sector housing need assessment methodologies. My conclusions are set out in Section 6.

For debate... medical research output 1973-81: a romp around the United Kingdom research centres

Achomaireacht:
peer-reviewed
In order to measure output of medical research in the United Kingdom, the computerised database of Excerpta Medica was used to count the number of publications emanating from each centre of research based on a medical school in 1973-81. Data were amalgamated for the first four years (1973-6) and the final four years (1978-81) and the two sets of data were compared. Eight centres showed a substantial change (20% or more) between the first and second periods. In London three medical schools showed an increase in output and one showed a decrease in output. Elsewhere Leicester, Nottingham, and Southampton schools showed an increase and Bristol showed a decrease. The overall contribution of Cambridge did not increase over the decade but the proportion of clinical papers among those produced at Cambridge did increase. There are deficiencies in this type of exercise as all articles are treated equally, but probably some of these problems could be overcome in a more sophis...

Transforming cultures: Open Access and the research-teaching nexus
(2011)

Achomaireacht:
A cultural transformation is needed to overcome the paradox at the heart of academia, namely: the people involved in teaching and research communities are often the same people `just wearing different hats? and convergence is already taking place in the world around them - so how is it possible that their activities can remain separate? Ireland?s HEA-supported open access research and teaching initiatives were used to illustrate the opportunities which are available in countries throughout Europe and to point the way forward. The authors reiterate the recommendation to the European Commission made in the Ghent Declaration of February 2011 ? 'to develop policies, research programmes and infrastructure platforms that support and advance the convergence of the four open initiatives' - open access, open data, open source software and open educational resources, noting that 'additional work is needed in other areas to achieve a broadening of research, scholarship and lea...

The function of marketing research in the distributive system
(1948)
Holmes, Denis
Achomaireacht:
Marketing research may be said to perform the same function in the economic system as the reconnaissance patrol performs in military manoeuvres. Its main purpose is to discover, as far in advance as possible, what are the intentions and probable future actions of "the enemy", who is, in this case, the general public. Our main concern is with the usages of commercial marketing research; but the possibilities of employing the methods described for the solution of other economic and social problems will be apparent. Marketing research is still very largely in the pioneering stage, and it is not possible as yet to forecast where its boundaries will be drawn.

Lessons from a Community-Based Participatory Research Project: Older People's and Researchers' Reflections
(2010)
TIMONEN, VIRPI; DOYLE, MARTHA
Achomaireacht:
The ethical and practical importance of actively involving older people in the research process is increasingly articulated in the gerontology literature. This article contributes to the literature by outlining a community-based participatory research project that centered on the design and administration of a questionnaire exploring older people?s use and perceptions of community services. The authors discuss both older adults? and the researchers? views of the participatory process. The key lessons and challenges that emerged from the research are analyzed using the nine principles of community-based participatory research outlined by Israel et al. The authors question whether older people in all instances seek extensive involvement in all aspects of participatory projects and raise a number of questions that require further analysis before a robust and viable understanding of participatory research that safeguards against the tokenistic involvement of older people can be developed.

Achomaireacht:
The paper describes efforts underway at the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure that environmental research data generated by the EPA's research funding programmes are properly managed with a view of future integration of these data streams into SEIS. The paper argues that the flows of data and information from environmental research will greatly enhance the usage and application of SEIS by assisting European citizens, stakeholders, decision makers, and policy makers obtain access to research data. The thematic, geospatial, and temporal heterogeneity of data and information flows from environmental research will provide SEIS with a rich geoscientifc resource.

Dialogical Action Research as Engaged Scholarship: An Empirical Study
(2011)
Costello, Gabriel J.; Conboy, Kieran; Donnellan, Brian
Achomaireacht:
The rigor versus relevance debate continues to be a matter of lively discussion in the information systems discipline. The main argument of this paper is that dialogical action research provides a methodology to pursue engaged scholarship in the IS field. The context is an examination of innovation management in an Irish subsidiary of APC by Schneider Electric. The primary objective of the paper is to answer the following research question: how does dialogical action research provide a milieu for engaged scholarship between researchers and practitioners. The work seeks to make a contribution by: testing out a novel form of action research; providing an empirical study of researcher-practitioner engagement; and suggesting improvements to the methodology. As a result the study should be pertinent to scholars who are interested in exploring approaches that facilitate real-world collaboration while also contributing to academic discourse

Workplace Mediation in Ireland: Bridging the Research-Practice Gap
(2015)
Curran, Deridre
Achomaireacht:
The purpose of this article is to present a case for the importance of research in informing mediation practice specifically in the context of the management of workplace conflict in Ireland. The position of mediation within the broader dispute-resolution framework is clarified at the outset and the core mediation process is described. The increasing use of mediation in Ireland and the changing institutional context within which it is conducted are discussed. The importance of research is stressed along with crucial methodological challenges. The paucity of workplace mediation research in Ireland is highlighted and the preliminary findings of an on-going research project are presented. The article concludes that more research into workplace mediation in Ireland is needed to inform practice in this area and to improve external perception of the legitimacy of mediation as a dispute resolution process.

Biomimetics in design-oriented information systems research
(2015)
Kaufmann, Michael; Portmann, Edy
Achomaireacht:
Modern information systems (ISs) are becoming increasingly complex. Simultaneously, organizational changes are occurring more often and more rapidly. Therefore, emergent behavior and organic adaptivity are key advantages of ISs. In this paper, a design science research (DSR) question for design-oriented information systems research (DISR) is proposed: Can the application of biomimetic principles to IS design result in the creation of value by innovation? Accordingly, the properties of biological IS are analyzed, and these insights are crystallized into a theoretical framework to address the three major aspects of biomimetic ISs: user experience, information processing, and management cybernetics. On this basis, the research question is elaborated together with a starting point for a research methodology in biomimetic information systems.

Dealing with emergent design science research projects in IS
(2015)
Pirkkalainen, Henri
Achomaireacht:
Multiple models, methods and frameworks have been proposed to guide Design Science Research (DSR) application to address relevant classes of problems in Information Systems (IS) discipline. While much of the ambiguity around the research paradigm has been removed, only the surface has been scratched on DSR efforts where researcher takes an active role in organizational and industrial engagement to solve a specific problem and generalize the solution to a class of problems. Such DSR projects can have a significant impact on practice, link theories to real contexts and extend the scope of DSR. Considering these multiform settings, the implications to theorizing nor the crucial role of researcher in the interplay of DSR and IS projects have not been properly addressed. The emergent nature of such projects needs to be further investigated to reach such contributions for both theory and practice. This paper raises multiple theoretical, organizational and managerial considerations for a m...

Achomaireacht:
A search result provided by existing digital library and web search systems typically comprises only a prioritised list of possible publications or web pages that meet the search criteria, possibly with excerpts and possibly with search terms highlighted. The research in progress reported in this poster contributes to a larger research effort to provide a readable summary of search results that synthesise relevant publications or web pages to provide results that meet four C’s: comprehensive, concise, coherent, and correct, as a more useful alternative to un-synthesised result lists. The scope of this research is limited to searching for and synthesising Design Science Research (DSR) publications that present the results of DSR, as an example problem domain.
