An Activity Theory Evaluation of a User Interface for a Web-based Virtual Research Environment (VRE)
(2015)
Yang, Lu
Achomaireacht:
Activity Theory is a framework or descriptive tool which is commonly used in Human-computer Interaction. In particular, it is used more and more in the design and evaluation of some collaborative systems such as a modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment. Activity Theory offers many advantages to interface design for interactive systems when compared with the traditional cognitive psychology approach. This is because the traditional cognitive method cannot penetrate the human side. Therefore, the thorough analysis of human activities in Activity Theory makes it an effective and efficient method for evaluation and design of a system. There is currently some ongoing research work on the design or evaluation of interactive systems, in particular commercial information systems. However, none of them are about online virtual research environments. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the interface of an online virtual research environment called CRADLE using Activity Theo...

Beautiful nerds: growing a rigorous design research dialogue in the Irish context
(2016)
de Eyto, Adam; Maher, Carmel; Hadfield, Mark; Hutchings, Maggie
Achomaireacht:
Ireland is a country with a small and emergent design research community. Relative to other countries, the practice of design itself in Ireland is a recent development with the first formal design courses materialising in the mid-1970s. Without historical legacy and sustained coordinated support from design specific state development agencies, the progress of this nascent Irish design sector has been fragmented and unfocused. Irish Design 2015 (ID2015) a yearlong government backed initiative sought to address this lack of coherence in tandem with increasing the visibility and profile of Irish design. This article reflects on the historical context Irish design research and practice sits within and explores the early success of the ITERATIONS Design Research and Practice review as one of a series of initiatives launched as part of ID2015. It makes the case for robust dialogue and advocacy in addressing the needs of a...

Research into Evaporative Cooling of Buildings in Maritime Climates
(2002)
Costelloe, Ben; Finn, Donal
Achomaireacht:

Concern with environmental emissions has focused attention on traditional forms of energy use in buildings, with a view to reducing and making more rational use of energy consumption. One area of concern is the traditional, refrigeration based, commercial air conditioning system, which has high levels of electrical power consumption in fans and refrigeration compressors. There is also concern among building owners and design teams, supported by the PROBE series of post occupancy studies, conducted by the CIBSE, that many buildings, with traditional forms of air conditioning, under perform in terms of occupant satisfaction, ease of operation and control, maintenance costs and successful commissioning. These developments have led to a search for lower energy and more satisfactory alternatives. Research into evaporative cooling indicates that the technique can offer a satisfactory alternative to refrigeration based cooling in a number of appropriate applications.

A scoping review of the potential for chart stimulated recall as a clinical research method
(2017)
Sinnott, Carol; Kelly, Martina A.; Bradley, Colin P.
Achomaireacht:
Background: Chart-stimulated recall (CSR) is a case-based interviewing technique, which is used in the assessment of clinical decision-making in medical education and professional certification. Increasingly, clinical decision-making is a concern for clinical research in primary care. In this study, we review the prior application and utility of CSR as a technique for research interviews in primary care. Methods: Following Arksey & O'Malley's method for scoping reviews, we searched seven databases, grey literature, reference lists, and contacted experts in the field. We excluded studies on medical education or competence assessment. Retrieved citations were screened by one reviewer and full texts were ordered for all potentially relevant abstracts. Two researchers independently reviewed full texts and performed data extraction and quality appraisal if inclusion criteria were met. Data were collated and summarised using a published framework on the reporting of qualitat...

Research and development in the Irish electronics industry
(1993)
Madden, Joe
Achomaireacht:
The electronics industry is a rapidly changing technology driven industry. Intensive research and development activity in electronics has been partly responsible for the emergence of Japan as an economic superpower and the rapid development of the Korean economy. Following the publication of the Telesis Review of Industrial Policy in 1982, the Irish Government undertook a gradually more interventionist policy towards the indigenous electronics industry. In the ten years since Telesis there has been significant growth in business expenditure on R&D in electronics but this growth has come exclusively from multinational companies. Indigenous expenditure on R&D has remained static but has become concentrated in specific sectors. These sectors are industrial control, security systems and electronics for the building industry where economies of scale are not important and in the power supply sectors where economies of scale are not possible. Factors critical to effective resear...

Achomaireacht:
The work of the Council in supporting research continues to evolve. The research unit programme started in 1979 and will have completed one full cycle when three of the initial units - Coeliac Disease in University College, Galway, Alcohol in Trinity College, Dublin and Hypertension in University College, Cork - come to an end in December, 1985. In anticipation of this the Council invited new applications in July. The initial response indicates considerable interest among medical scientists. The successful units will be named in mid-1985 so as to allow time to get the programme underway in January, 1986. During the year under review one unit - Drugs in the Elderly under the direction of Professor Kevin O'Malley - was funded. This unit was initially approved in 1982. The Council has been aware for some years that new accommodation was required for its laboratories in Trinity College, Dublin. This was necessitated by the building programme in the College. Fortunately it was possi...

Achomaireacht:
The year of 1975 was one of financial stringency which delayed the progress of the Hospital In-patient Enquiry Scheme because a number of hospitals stated that they were unable to obtain the necessary records staff to complete the necessary forms. During the year many meetings with hospitals' staffs took place to discuss the various problems associated with the Hospital In-patient Enquiry Scheme. A number of research projects were undertaken based on the hospital discharges reported in this scheme. Dr. Peadar Kirke, a member of the staff of the Board completed the M.Sc. course in Social Medicine at the London School of Medicine with distinction. He has now returned to work with the Board. He assists the Director in the supervision of our various research projects and is undertaking studies in perinatal mortality and child health. Dr. Dermot Walsh describes in this report the progress of a number of studies on mental health both at national and at community level. Dr. Mairin Ni ...

Achomaireacht:
After the Hospital In-patient Enquiry Scheme the largest group of research projects undertaken by the Board are those on mental health under the direction of Dr. Dermot Walsh, Dr. Mairin Ni Nuallain and Mrs. Aileen O'Hare, the Board's senior sociologist. Irish immigrants in England have also been investigated and during 1976 a study was undertaken in the four Thames Regional Health Authority areas of England on psychiatric hospitalisation of Irish immigrants. This study is being carried out by the Department of Health and Social Security in London and the results will be analysed and reported in 1977. The Director of the Board and Dr. Adelstein of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, London, undertook a study on suicide and self-poisoning which compared the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England and Wales. Although suicide rates are lowest in the Republic of Ireland they are higher among the Irish immigrants in England and Wales than amo...

Achomaireacht:
The objective of this paper is to provide a detailed evaluation of type 2 diabetes mellitus research output from 1951-2012, using large-scale data analysis, bibliometric indicators and density-equalizing mapping. Data were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded database, one of the seven curated databases within Web of Science. Using Boolean operators "OR", "AND" and "NOT", a search strategy was developed to estimate the total number of published items. Only studies with an English abstract were eligible. Type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes items were excluded. Specific software developed for the database analysed the data. Information including titles, authors' affiliations and publication years were extracted from all files and exported to excel. Density-equalizing mapping was conducted as described by Groenberg-Kloft et al, 2008. A total of 24,783 items were published and cited 476,002 times. The greatest number of outputs were ...

Action design research: a comparison with canonical action research and design science
(2015)
Maccani, Giovanni; Donnellan, Brian; Helfert, Markus
Achomaireacht:
This research in progress paper addresses the IS issue in relation to conducting relevant research while keeping academic rigor. In particular, it contributes to the ongoing academic conversation around the investigation on how to incor-porate action in design science research. In this document the philosophical underpinnings of the recently proposed methodology called Action Design Re-search [1] are derived, outlined and integrated into Burrel and Morgan’s Par-adigmatic Framework (1979)[6]. The results so far show how Action Design Research can be considered as a particular case of Design Science Research (rather than a methodology closely related to Action Research) although they can assume two different epistemological positions. From these philosophical perspectives, future works will involve the inclusion of actual research projects using the three different methodologies. The final goal is to outline and structure the divergences and similarities of Action Design Research with...

How Do Doctoral Research Academics Perceive Their Research Activities to be of Benefit to Undergraduate Students
(2010)
McCauley, James
Achomaireacht:

The principal aim of my research is to investigate the perceptions of Doctoral research academics regarding the benefit of their research activities to undergraduate students. Through in-depth interviews, the research aims to establish the level of communication that Doctoral researchers initiate with their undergraduate students about their research activities as well as the extent to which they know if these students perceive these activities as positive or negative. The extent to which students proactively queried such academics about their research activities is also examined. Two main types of activities were identified as having a positive impact: topic specific ‘cutting-edge’ knowledge was perceived as being beneficial as well as the broad-based liberal learning ethos that such academics brought to their teaching. Doctoral researchers research methods skills were of benefit, especially to dissertation students. A caveat for both however, was that they should not be ...

"How to match research designs to organisational issues in health and social care"
(2013)
LEE, MANDY S.
Achomaireacht:
This paper provides an overview of the key considerations we need to take into account when deciding on a suitable research design for addressing particular service issues in health and social care, with emphasis on the task of identifying research questions at each stage of the applied research process. I present a model for determining research rigour in health services research and a model for defining research questions for each stage of the applied research cycle, from problem specification through to outcome assessment. The paper concludes with a check-list of the key issues we need to consider when designing a health services research project.

The Researched Opinions on Research: disabled people and disability research
(2000)
Kitchin, Rob
Achomaireacht:
Thirty-five disabled people with a range of physical, sensory and mental impairments were interviewed about (1) their experiences of research; (2) their general opinions concerning research; (3) whether they thought research had served/was serving disabled people well; (4) how research on disability should be conducted; (5) who should conduct research on disability; and, finally, (6) what they would like to be researched. In this paper, the results of aspects two to five are reported. It was found that the opinions of disabled people mirror quite strongly the recent arguments forwarded by disabled academics concerning the need for emancipatory and empowering research strategies. In particular, the respondents articulated a need for inclusive, action-based research strategies, where disabled people are involved as consultants and partners not just as research subjects, There were few arguments, however, for an exclusive approach, where disability research would be conducted solely by...

Power, culture and researcher identity: an ethos of international academic 'north-south' public health research
(2016)

Achomaireacht:

Health research between lower and middle income countries and higher income countries can lead to important ethical questions at different stages in the research cycle. To date, research in the area focuses primarily on either:

micro research ethical issues: incorporating traditional definitions of research ethics such as research ethics reviews processes, informed consent and community engagement.

macro research ethical issues: though generally not designated as ‘ethical’ matters, these studies include broader issues of the politics of the research process, from agenda setting to capacity building, to authorship, and how research actors and institutions function and interact.

The overall study aim is to undertake a situated ethics analysis of international academic public health research between the global north and the global south, using Zambia as...

A Different Type of Lighting Research: a Qualitative Methodology
(2016)
Kelly, Kevin
Achomaireacht:

As lighting researchers we can learn from our colleagues in the humanities who have progressed Qualitative Research methods to a high level of rigour. We should consider using Qualitative Research Methods more. Such methods allow exploration of complex issues involving human behaviour and facilitate researchers to address difficult to answer questions that otherwise go unanswered. Good quality Qualitative Research can provide rich explanations of what went on in a given situation. Validity and Reliability are considered differently with this type of research methodology. This paper attempts to identify when qualitative research is appropriate, what questions it can answer in lighting research, how it is done, list the features and provide a simple brief example of a post occupancy evaluation case study. It is argued that qualitative research can be used with quantitative research; before quantitative research to inform it or afterwards to explain it; but it can also be extr...

Social Networking Sites: Evaluating and Investigating Their Use in Academic Research
(2010)
Redmond, Fiona
Achomaireacht:

Researchers must collect and analyse new data that will enhance the body of knowledge. It is for this reason that data is of major importance to researchers. All aspects of a research project involve data, from navigating existing data, to understanding how data is used in the world and why it is important to learn to collect data and make predictions. Researchers need to consider the types of data that are possible and examine and weight each option so they can determine what sources of data will answer the research questions or hypotheses. Researchers, who require a large amount of participants to contribute to their data collection and assist in their research, are limited in the choice of current research methods including questionnaires, postal surveys and online surveys and also limited in the number of respondents they can obtain to participate in their research. This paper proposes a new research method through the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS’s). It aims ...

Contradictions in Irish Academic Research
(2005)
Jerrams, Stephen; Donovan, John
Achomaireacht:

The conditions that govern academic research vary greatly from country to country and research in the Republic of Ireland was and remains markedly different from that of its larger European neighbours and the United States. Despite the quality of its education system and the excellent reputation of its universities, until recently Ireland had relatively low levels of academic research. Pinnacles of excellence could be found in certain disciplines, but state funding was low and issues relating to industrial collaborations, international partnerships, commercialisation and the exploitation of Intellectual Property (IP) rarely arose. Even today the Irish Government’s spending on academic research, though only slightly less than the European average based on GNP, is dwarfed by the Research and Development (R & D) budgets of individual multinational companies. Nonetheless, rapid economic growth has led to a heightened awareness of the need for strategically planned research....

Eye tracking in translation process research: methodological challenges and solutions
(2009)
O'Brien, Sharon
Achomaireacht:
Eye tracking has been eagerly adopted as a technique in translation process research in recent years and, with it, comes a long list of methodological challenges, some of which are specific to translation process research, some of which are more general. This paper represents an attempt by a recent convert to eye tracking to document the various challenges and to offer suggestions for how some of them might be addressed by others who are interested in embracing this very interesting mode of investigation. It is difficult to comment only on those challenges related to eye tracking without mentioning issues that pertain to the more general questions of research design in the domain of translation process research as the two are inevitably linked. By highlighting challenges, one is inevitably exposing research design weaknesses. However, this should not be viewed negatively but should rather be seen as a means of improving the quality of combined research outputs with the aim of maturi...

Achomaireacht:
A substantial increase in research into the lives of children has been experienced in Ireland over the last few years. This increase is not only in the amount of research undertaken but also in the multi-disciplinary range of such research. Compared to requirements in research with adult research participants, research with children faces additional ethical challenges. These challenges are related especially to children’s decision-making capacity, their vulnerability and the particular role of parents or guardians in the research process. The strong demand for protecting children from harm needs to be balanced with the equally urgent need for well-founded research findings that can help improve services for children.

Health Research Annual Report 1988
(1988)
Health Reseach Board (HRB)
Achomaireacht:
SUMMARY The second year of operation of the Health Research Board has been characterised by a period of consolidation combined with some further rationalisation. At the beginning of the year the Board decided to engage in an execise to review its research activities and to establish research and funding priorities for the future. As part of this process a wide consultation took place with the research community and research users and the feedback received from both individuals and groups proved extremely valuable to the Board in planning its future programmes. Although the funds available to the Board remain severely limited it did prove possible to develop some new research activity through its various grant schemes. A total of 46 new high quality research projects were initiated and funding support for a further 43 on-going research projects was renewed. The support of high quality bio-medical and health research projects is the primary means by which the Board contributes to main...
