Action research: a learning tool that engages complexity
(2009)
Kenny, Michael; Hynes, Rachel
Achomaireacht:
Innovative micro-teaching to enhance student teaching/learning is increasingly using the concept of Action Research. In action research the particular focus is on the subject of the research also being a learner from the research outcome. The Kemmis Model (Cyclical Model of Action Research) introduced the notion that ‘all teachers are learners’ and ‘all learners can be teachers’. Action research emphasises the notion of self observation and self reflection. However observation and self reflection are challenging methods that value the personal nature of learning. The authors undertook an action research experiment, as part of their own professional learning, by introducing micro teaching practicum presentations video recording to a postgraduate education class of 20 adult/community educators during a curriculum development module. In this exercise the learning group was subdivided into two parts: 1. The first group of students were recorded and a DVD was made available to each prese...

Managing Environmental Research Data.
(2009)
Mooney, Peter; Winstanley, Adam C.
Achomaireacht:
Environmental science researchers are now using and generating ever-increasing volumes of data and information about our natural world. It is estimated that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA's) STRIVE (Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for the Environment) research funding programme will “involve more than 1,000 researchers and company-based scientists over its seven-year lifetime”1. The EPA's Environmental Research Centre (ERC) expects that large volumes of environmental data and information will be generated by projects funded by STRIVE. One of the key objectives of the STRIVE programme is to make the outcomes and data from this research available “in a coherent and timely manner which will ensure synergies across the wider research agenda and early availability of these outputs into the formulation of policy”2. Consequently, the STRIVE programme must adopt best international practice in environmental research data management. Management of these envi...

An overview of online-research in information systems
(2015)
Levina, Olga; Wochatz, Martin
Achomaireacht:
As the Internet has changed communication, commerce, and the distribution of information, so it is changing Information Systems Research (ISR). The goal of this paper is to put the topic of application and reliability of online research into the focus of ISR by exploring the extension of online research methods (ORM) into its popular publication outlets. 513 articles from high ranked ISR publication outlets from the last decade have been analyzed using online content analysis. The findings show that in ISR online research methods are applied despite the missing discussion on the validity of the theories and methods that were defined offline within the new environment and the associated challenges.

Correlational Research: Importance and Use in Nursing and Health Research
(2015)
COMISKEY, CATHERINE; CURTIS, ELIZABETH
Achomaireacht:
Background and Discussion: The importance of correlational research has been reported in the literature yet many research texts including nursing books offer little discussion on the design; with several providing approximately one to three pages in chapters entitled, for example, quantitative designs. This article targets this gap by focusing key considerations for planning a correlational study. Specifically, it discusses the importance and purpose of correlational research, its application, analysis and interpretation with contextualisations to nursing and health research. Review Methods and Data Sources: Materials were sourced primarily from books on research and statistics as few relevant research papers were located. Several databases were used and the date range for searches was 1980-2015. Conclusion: Findings from correlational research can be used to determine prevalence, relationships among variables and to forecast events from current data and knowledge. In spite of its m...

Ethical Issues in Internet Research: International Good Practice and Irish Research Ethics Documents
(2013)
Felzmann, Heike
Achomaireacht:
This chapter discusses the main research ethical concerns that arise in internet research and reviews existing research ethical guidance in the Irish context in relation to its application to internet research. The chapter begins with a brief outline of high profile cases in the early history of the internet that highlighted specific emerging ethical concerns regarding the new medium and the first development of ethical guidance in this context. Important research ethical concerns in internet research are then presented. These include: (i) understanding the specific relationship between researchers, participants and the online materials, and the ethical significance of contributors' potential lack of awareness of research conducted on their online interactions, (ii) clarifying privacy expectations and ethical requirements regarding the access to and use of online materials, (iii) implementing ethically appropriate consent processes in the online medium, (iv) doing justice to c...

Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI)
Achomaireacht:
This publication provides a snapshot of the ageing research landscape across the island of Ireland. By 2030 one in five people on the island of Ireland will be 65 years or older. As the population ages research into ageing and older people is vital to help plan for healthier and more active later lives for everyone. Academic institutions across the island are engaged in a wide range of research programmes and projects relating to ageing. Ageing is increasingly viewed as a research priority for these institutions and the island of Ireland is gaining recognition as a place of excellence for ageing research. This publication provides an overview of research relating to ageing being carried out in their various third level institutions in Ireland, North and South. It combined these profiles with information about a selection of major collaborative research projects and CARDI’s research funding activities to produce an update of a previous directory published in 2010. Towards emancipatory and empowering disability research: Reflections on three participatory action research projects
(2002)
Kitchin, Rob
Achomaireacht:
In this paper I consider recent debates in disability studies concerning how disability research should be conducted, who should conduct such research, and the ideology underlying research practice. Using data from in-depth interviews with thirty-five disabled people from Belfast and Dublin, I outline how they view disability research and how it is and should be conducted. I then detail three participatory action research (PAR) projects conducted in recent years – one concerning access to family planning clinics in Northern Ireland, one concerning access to school education in Kildare, and one creating an access map of Newbridge, Kildare - and reflect on their successes and failures in order to assess the developing an emancipatory and empowering research culture.

An Investigation in the Methodological Approaches used in Doctoral Business Research in Ireland
(2017)
Mc Manus, Paul; Mulhall, Sue; Ragab, Mohamed; Arisha, Amr
Achomaireacht:

The sizeable increase in doctoral business research in Ireland over past decades is characterised by a diversity of research paradigms and the methods applied. To achieve research objectives, doctoral researchers should identify the methodological framework of inquiry that they will use to address and answer their research question. This involves taking a stance on divergent philosophical assertions such as ontology and epistemology, which reflect how they view the world. Researchers often proceed to select what is believed to be the best- suited research approach – either qualitative, quantitative, or a mixture between them – with their corresponding subset of data collection and analysis techniques. This paper aims to examine extant doctoral research in business over a ten-year period within the Irish academic community to ascertain prominent methodological practices, recent trends, and the philosophical underpinnings surrounding the choices made. BERA review 2006: education research and policy
(2008)
Byrne, Delma
Achomaireacht:
The review examines the relationship between educational research and policy, from the post-war period to the present, throughout the United Kingdom. Its purpose is to (a) illuminate the changing relationship between education research and policy, and (b) to clarify the different ways in which that relationship is understood. Its overarching purpose is to enable the education research community to locate current debates about research and policy within historical and theoretical frames of reference, and to enable researchers to locate themselves and their work in this contested area. The review is structured in three main sections. The first explores the shifting meanings of research and policy, with attention to the ways in which particular definitions of research produce consequences for the ways in which policy is understood, and vice versa. From these discussions, which include differences between applied, basic and strategic research, and between ‘policy science’ and ‘policy sc...

Achomaireacht:
In an article entitled 'The psychologist's contribution to educational research' Professors J. D. Nisbet & N. J. Entwistle begin by surveying briefly different definitions educational research itself with a view to drawing a distinction between "pure research the social sciences and educational research in the area of the applied sciences" Having suggested this distinction the authors clearly favour a definition which would remove educational research from the category of pure to that of applied research accordingly, their own definition states that "educational research consists in careful, systematic attempts to understand the educational process and, through understanding, improve its efficiency". Pursuing the consequences for educational enquiry of definition they themselves outline, Nisbet & Entwistle point out that this shift in emphasis from 'understanding' to 'improvement' is likely to be dis- puted by many who ...

Action design research as a method-in-use: problems and opportunities
(2017)
Haj-Bolouri, Amir; Purao, Sandeep; Rossi, Matti; Bernhardsson, Lennarth
Achomaireacht:
This paper reports on the results of a study to investigate how scholars engage with and use the action design research (ADR) approach. ADR has been acknowledged as an important variant of the Design Science Research approach, and has been adopted by a number of scholars, as the methodological basis for doctoral dissertations as well as multidisciplinary research projects. With this use, the research community is learning about how to apply ADR's central tenets in different contexts. In this paper, we draw on primary data from researchers who have recently engaged in or finished an ADR project to identify recurring problems and opportunities related to working in different ADR stages, balancing demands from practice and research, and addressing problem instance vs. class of problems. Our work contributes a greater understanding of how ADR projects are carried out in practice, how researchers use ADR, and pointers to possibilities for extending ADR.

How do Doctoral Research Academics Perceive their Research Activities to be of Benefit to Undergraduate Students?
(2011)

Achomaireacht:

The principal rationale for this research paper is to discuss the link between a lecturers Doctoral research activity and its perceived benefits or drawbacks for undergraduate students in todays’ Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s).The perceptions that six Doctoral academics have with regard to the impact their work has on such students was specifically investigated. In-depth interviews with them gleaned research results which demonstrate the degree to which their research activities have positive or negative consequences for undergraduate students.

Broadly speaking, three main types of activities were identified as having a positive impact, First was the topic-specific ‘cutting-edge’ knowledge that was perceived as beneficial to students. Secondly, the broad-based liberal learning ethos they brought to their teaching added value, whereby some students basked in their ‘reflected glory’.Thirdly, their specific res...

Achomaireacht:
Introduction: In recent years, the growth of published health-related research articles has increased substantially. As a result there is a huge challenge for authors to get themselves and their research papers noticed by academia, health professionals and the wider public. This poster presentation outlines some of the main methods that authors can employ to increase the impact of their research. Methods: A review of current literature was conducted to establish best international practice for improving the impact of research outputs. This was supplemented by a review of blogs, websites, seminar presentations and other online material from bibliometrics experts and reputable universities. Results: The results of the review found many different ways in which research impact can be improved but for clarity the five most important methods are presented. Researchers can increase the impact of their research by:1. Publishing in high impact journals;2. Collaborating with other researchers;...

Friendship in the Field: Ethics and Reflexivity in Auto/biographical Research
(2014)
O?Donoghue, Connor Tiarnach
Achomaireacht:
The aim of this paper is to explore a model of researcher reflexivity, drawn from anthropological literature and applied to an auto/biographical study of young men in university. Social scientific research can involve significant revelation of self for research participants through data generation tools such as interviews, diaries, photographs and social media, and this can have an impact on researchers, who can often be sensitive to the type of material they are studying, and sometimes deeply affected by it. This paper comes out of life history research completed with participants who lived with the researcher, and with whom he developed a friendship. Auto/biographies were co-constructed across a series of themed, semi-structured life history interviews, supplemented with visual and written data generated by the research participants. The paper addresses issues of researcher reflexivity and ethics when friendship intrudes on research, and looks at a number of models for dealing wit...

Achomaireacht:

In Ireland, in the context of an increasingly knowledge-focused society, financial support for health-related research has increased exponentially in the last decade. Yet little is known about the views of the public, in Ireland and elsewhere, on developments in science, medicine and technology which affect their lives. The aim of the present study was to provide the first nationally representative profile regarding public perceptions on use of human tissue in medical research in Ireland. Specifically, the research aimed to provide nationally representative data on: public willingness to donate a tissue sample for medical research; public preferences for informed consent procedures in relation to the use and storage of human tissue for medical research; public preferences for tissue storage (linked or unlinked model of storage); level of feedback on research findings considered desirable by the public; public awareness of, and attitudes towards, the recent organ retention c...

The top 10 research priorities relating to long-term aphasia, following stroke
(2015)
McManus, Sasha Demos
Achomaireacht:
Background: Studies with people with aphasia are warranted as this group is often excluded from research. Stakeholder derived research priorities are seen as an opportunity to identify what matters most to people with aphasia, their families and health professionals, and are desirable in order to inform research funding bodies. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report on the top 10 research priorities related to long term aphasia from the perspective of people with aphasia (PWA), their carers and speech and language therapists (SLT). Methods: In this study we adopted the James Lind Alliance methodology, established to bring patients, carers and clinicians together in a ‘priority setting partnerships (PSP)’ to identify and prioritize unanswered research questions. Results: 46 participants (21 PWA, 18 SLTs and 7 carers) were included in the study. A top 10 research priority list was derived for each. Research priorities were grouped into themes (‘General management strategie...

Health Research Board (HRB)
Achomaireacht:
When the Health Research Board took up office in January 1987 its remit included the development of programmes in medical research, health and health services research and epidemiological research: Following a period of review and rationalisation of its resources, consultation with the research community on future research priorities, and the appointment of a new Chief Executive, the Board was geared to commence the undertaking of the wider research responsibilities assigned to it. However, the publication of the estimates for the public service in October 1988 revealed that the Board's financial allocation for 1989 would be £ 1.3 million. This created a very serious situation for the Board as it represented a 43% reduction in the grant-inaid in comparison with an allocation of £2.3 million for 1987 and 1988 respectively. Given that a base budget of £2.3 million represented a minimal level of support the consequences of a budget of £ 1.3 million were almost calamitous. Followin...

Achomaireacht:
The aim of this guidance paper, produced by a working group on behalf of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA), is to advise on good practice principles for undertaking research with children (defined in Ireland as people below the age of 18). The need to protect children when they are involved in research is self-evident, but it has taken a relatively long time to translate this notion into policy and practice. The history of research endeavour includes many unethical practices involving children from intrusive and invasive procedures, to the over-investigation of some populations. Organisations caring for children sometimes regarded them as a ready source of research data with little regard to the ethical issues involved. The voices of children were rarely heard in research and their potential to contribute to its development ignored. The objective of this document is to provide ethical guidance for developing research projects involving children across a range o...

Growing Research in a Traditionally Teaching-Oriented College
(2007)
Murphy, Mike; Dyrenfurth, Michael
Achomaireacht:

There is increasing pressure on universities to contribute to ‘the knowledge society’ by increasing the level of research activity and output within the university. This is particularly true in the sciences, engineering and technology. This increased pressure applies equally to traditionally teaching-oriented colleges (TTOC), although not at the same scale as research-intensive universities. For the TTOC, given the primacy of teaching, this paper discusses the nexus between teaching and research and the question ‘why do research?’ is addressed within the overarching goal of embedding a research culture within the college. Initiatives to develop and grow sustainable research activity in traditionally teaching-oriented colleges are introduced and discussed. It seeks to answer the question as to how such initiatives can prove successful in both North American and European colleges.

Using the Technology of the Confessional as an Analytical Resource: Four Analytical Stances Towards Research Interviews in Discourse Analysis
(2007)
O'Rourke, Brendan; Pitt, Martyn
Achomaireacht:

Among the various approaches that have developed from FOUCAULT's work is an Anglophone discourse analysis that has attempted to combine FOUCAULTian insights with the techniques of Conversation Analysis. An important current methodological issue in this discourse analytical approach is its theoretical preference for "naturally occurring" rather than research interview data. A FOUCAULTian perspective on the interview as a research instrument, questions the idea of "naturally-occurring discourse". The "technology of the confessional" operates, not only within research interviews, but permeates other interactions as well. Drawing on FOUCAULT does not dismiss the problems of the interview as research instrument rather it shows they cannot be escaped by simply switching to more "natural" interactions. Combining these insights with recent developments within discourse analysis can provide analytical resources for, rather than barriers t...
