24-Hour Electrical Load Data - A Time Series or a Set of Independent Points?
(2001)
Fay, Damien; Ringwood, John; Condon, Marissa; Kelly, Michael
Achomaireacht:
The paper investigates whether a time series or a set of independent points is a more appropriate description of 24-hour Irish electrical load data. A set of independent points means that the load at each hour of the day is independent from the load at any other hour. The data is first split into 24 series, one for each hour of the day i.e. a 1am 2am 3am series etc. These are called parallel series. The linear cross-correlation's of the parallel series are used to indicate independence. While the loads at 9am and 6pm to 8pm appear independent the remaining loads are highly inter-correlated. This suggests that 24-hour electrical load data has a dual nature. Two techniques are used to test this hypothesis. The first technique models each parallel series using neural networks. This technique is found to be computationally expensive. The second technique uses a hybrid technique called the Multi Time Scale (MTS) technique. This models 24-hour electrical load data as a time series th...

Forecasting Electrical Load Using a Multi-time-scale Approach
(1999)
Ringwood, John; Murray, F.T.
Achomaireacht:
This paper describes the application of a multi-time-scale technique to the modelling and forecasting of short-term electrical load. The multi-time-scale technique is based on adjusting the underlying short sampling period forecast time series with specific target points and possible aggregated demand. This allows not only improvement of the short sampling period forecast, but also focuses on weighting the accuracy of the forecast at certain critical points e.g. the overnight minimum and daily peaks. Various model types may be utilised at the upper level (forecating the aggregated consumption and target points at daily level), including intelligent models such as neural and fuzzy models, but the base model is currently restricted to a linear form. Results for the Irish national electrical grid demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique.

Mechanism-based Inhibition: Deriving KI and kinact directly from Time-Dependent IC50 Values
(2009)

Achomaireacht:
The potential of enzyme inhibition of a drug is frequently quantified in terms of IC50 values. While this is a suitable quantity for reversible inhibitors, concerns arise when dealing with irreversible, or mechanism-based inhibitors (MBI). IC50 values of MBI are time-dependent, causing serious problems when aiming at ranking different compounds with respect to their inhibitory potential. As a consequence, most studies and ranking schemes related to MBI rely on the inhibition constant (KI) and the rate of enzyme inactivation (kinact) rather than on IC50 values. In this article we derive a novel relation between potentially time-dependent IC50 values and KI, kinact parameters for different types of inhibition. This allows for direct estimation of KI and kinact values from time-dependent IC50 values, even without the need of additional pre-incubation experiments. The application of this approach is illustrated using a fluorimetric assay to access the drug-drug interaction potential ass...

Multi-frequency scale Gaussian regression for noisy time-series data.
(2006)
Seng Neo, Kian; Leithead, W.E.; Zhang, Yunong
Achomaireacht:
Regression using Gaussian process models is applied to time-series data analysis. To extract from the data separate components with different frequency scales, the Gaussian regression methodology is extended through the use of multiple Gaussian process models. Fast and memory-efficient methods, as required by Gaussian regression to cater for large time-series data sets, are discussed. These methods are based on the generalised Schur algorithm and a procedure to determine the Schur decomposition of matrices, the key step to realising them, is presented. In addition, a procedure to appropriately initialise the Gaussian process model training is presented. The utility of the procedures is illustrated by application of a multiple Gaussian process model to extract separate components with different frequency scales from a 5000-point time-series data set with gaps.

Stillorgan QBC Dwell Time Analysis
(2014)
O'Connor, David; Kavanagh, Philip
Achomaireacht:

on the Stillorgan Quality Bus Corridor (QBC), a key arterial bus corridor accessing Dublin city centre from its suburbs. The focus of the study was to understand the pattern of dwell-time on the corridor and to identify potential areas, if any, where service levels may be enhanced. The study should provide a beneficial and detailed observation of in-journey bus operations. This in turn can help to understand the impact of ticketing, boarding/alighting and other aspects of journey dwell within a high-level of service bus corridor. The Stillorgan QBC, between Foxrock Church and Leeson Street Bridge, comprises of 28 bus stops, 32 signalised junctions and measures approximately 9km. There are 60 locations, exclusive of running-time delays, where there is the potential for dwell to occur. 21 inbound journey time surveys were carried out in the morning commuter peak period over 7 days between the hours of 07:00 and 10:00, with 3 surveys carried out every day, one in each hour. What are the limits to time series based recognition of semantic concepts?
(2016)
Wang, Peng; Sun, Lifeng; Yang, Shiqiang; Smeaton, Alan F.
Achomaireacht:
Most concept recognition in visual multimedia is based on relatively simple concepts, things which are present in the image or video. These usually correspond to objects which can be identified in images or individual frames. Yet there is also a need to recognise semantic con- cepts which have a temporal aspect corresponding to activities or com- plex events. These require some form of time series for recognition and also require some individual concepts to be detected so as to utilise their time-varying features, such as co-occurrence and re-occurrence patterns. While results are reported in the literature of using concept detections which are relatively specific and static, there are research questions which remain unanswered. What concept detection accuracies are satisfactory for time series recognition? Can recognition methods perform equally well across various concept detection performances? What affecting factors need to be taken into account when building concept-based high-...

Estimating missing data in hierarchical space-time series with a short temporal extent
(2014)
Charlton, Martin; Brunsdon, Chris; Cahalane, Conor; Pforte, Lars
Achomaireacht:
A challenging problem exists in the estimation of missing space-time data where the time series are relatively short, and the space series belong to a spatial hierarchy. An example is provided by the population estimates for regions belonging to the NUTS hierarchy which are available from the EUROSTAT data portal. The table demo_r_gind3 provides estimates of the population of NUTS0/1/2/3 regions at the 1st January 2000…2012 inclusive. Inspection of the table reveals that estimates are missing for 2000-2003 for two of the five NUTS3 regions in the NUTS2 region of Liège. There are other instances of missing data at NUTS3 where there are data for the corresponding higher level NUTS regions. The EUROSTAT table demo_r_d2jan provides estimates of the population on the 1st January for a longer time period, 1990…2012 inclusive, but these are only to NUTS2. Again, there is missing data. The question then arises as to whether it is possible to estimate the missing series. The NUTS2 values act...

Real-time PCR detection of Dinophysis species in Irish coastal waters
(2010)
Kavanagh, S.; Brennan, C.; O’Connor, L.; Moran, S.; Salas, R.; Lyons, J.; Silke, J.; Maher, M.
Achomaireacht:
Peer-reviewed.
Diarrhetic shellfish toxin-producing Dinophysis species occur in Irish coastal waters throughout the year. Dinophysis acuta and Dinophysis acuminata are the most commonly occurring species and are responsible for the majority of closures of Irish mussel farms. This study describes the development of a qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for identification of D. acuta and D. acuminata in Irish coastal waters. DNA sequence information for the D1-D2 region of the large ribosomal sub-unit (LSU) was obtained, following single-cell PCR of D. acuta and D. acuminata cells isolated from Irish coastal locations. PCR primers and hybridization probes, specific for the detection of D. acuta, were designed for real-time PCR on the LightCycler™. The LightCycler™ software melt curve analysis programme determined that D. acuta was identified by a melt-peak at 61°C, while D. acuminata cells produced a melt peak at 48°C. The limit of detection of the real-tim...

Time-Skew Hebb Rule in a Nonisopotential Neuron
(1995)
Pearlmutter, Barak A.
Achomaireacht:
In an isopotential neuron with rapid response, it has been shown that the receptive fields formed by Hebbian synaptic modulation depend on the principal eigenspace of Q(0), the input autocorrelation matrix, where Qij(τ) = 〈ξi(τ) ξj(t − T)〉 and ξi(t) is the input to synapse i at time t (Oja 1982). We relax the assumption of isopotentiality, introduce a time-skewed Hebb rule, and find that the dynamics of synaptic evolution are determined by the principal eigenspace of . This matrix is defined by , where Kij(τ) is the neuron's voltage response to a unit current injection at synapse j as measured τ seconds later at synapse i, and ψi(τ) is the time course of the opportunity for modulation of synapse i following the arrival of a presynaptic action potential.

Married Women in the Irish Part-time Labour Market
(1998)
Doris, Aedin
Achomaireacht:
This paper uses an econometric analysis of the 1987 Economic and Social Research Institute household survey data to assess the sources of the growth which has occurred in parttime employment in the last decade. The models used allow both for the possibility that the hours of work choice is a discrete one, and for the influence of the demand side of the labour market on a woman's choice between part-time and full-time work. The results confirm the impression gained from descriptive statistics that the growth in part-time employment has been supply-led, but that the growth of the Services sector has facilitated this increase.

Multi-Channel Audio Time-Scale Modification
(2005)

Achomaireacht:
Phase vecoder based approaches to audio time-scale modification introduce a reverberant artefact into the time scaled output. Recent techniques have been developed to reduce the presence of this artefact; however, these techniques have the effect of introducing additional issues relating to their application to multi-channel recordings. This paper addresses these issues by collectively analysing all channels prior to time-scaling each individual channel.

A classification of techniques for the compensation of time delayed processes. Part 1: Parameter optimised controllers
(1999)
O'Dwyer, Aidan; Ringwood, John
Achomaireacht:
An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. It is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of the two parts of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed; Part 1 of the paper considers the use of parameter optimised controllers for the compensation problem, with Part 2 of the paper considering the use of structurally optimised compensators. Conclusions are drawn at the end of Part 2.

Comparison of two B-polynomial methods: application to the identification of time delayed processes
(2001)
Gao, Ruiyao; O'Dwyer, Aidan
Achomaireacht:
An extensive literature exists on the estimation of the model parameters of time delayed processes. The objective of this paper is to review the main B-polynomial approaches to the delay estimation problem. More specifically, two algorithms are discussed and compared theoretically and in simulation. The algorithms involve various procedures to assess how the model relates to the observed data, to a priori knowledge, and to the algorithms’ intended use. Simulation results indicate that both the algorithms can suitably identify the model parameters, including the time delay. This paper also discusses advantages and disadvantages of the methods and gives some guidelines for choosing the appropriate algorithm.

Speech-adaptive time-scale modification for computer assisted language learning
(2003)
Donnellan, Olivia; Jung, Elmar; Coyle, Eugene
Achomaireacht:
In traditional foreign language learning programmes students are offered a tutor model characterised by slow, deliberate speech. This is insufficient to prepare them to cope with native, colloquial speech. By applying a timescale modification (TSM) algorithm to natural-speed, native speech, students have access to a more desirable, natural speech corpus which permits them to practise essential listening skills in a more focussed manner. This paper presents a method which allows slowing down speech without compromising the quality, pitch or naturalness of the slowed speech by applying different scaling factors to different types of speech segments. The new method is compared to traditional uniform-rate techniques and other variable time-scaling methods. The results show that the proposed approach produces a superior quality output, even for high modification rates.

Model parameter and time delay estimation using gradient methods
(1994)

Achomaireacht:
A number of approaches have been proposed for parameter and time delay estimation of process models in single input, single output (SISO) control systems using gradient descent algorithms; some of these approaches involve the selection of a rational polynomial that is used to approximate time delay variations. Convergence of parameter and delay estimates using open loop time domain gradient methods
(2000)
O'Dwyer, Aidan; Ringwood, John
Achomaireacht:
This paper discusses the estimation of the parameters of a single input, single output (SISO) process, modelled in first order lag plus delay (FOLPD) form, using gradient methods in the open loop time domain. The paper considers the convergence of the process parameters to the model parameters. The convergence of the model delay is discussed first, when the non-delay model and process parameters are identical. The convergence of all of the model parameters is then considered, when all of the process parameters are unknown.

An Efficient Audio Time-scale Modification Algorithm for use in a Subband Implementation
(2003)
Dorran, David; Lawlor, Robert
Achomaireacht:

The Paola algorithm, is an efficient algorithm for the time scale modification of speech. It uses a simple peak alignment technique to synchronise synthesis frames and takes waveform properties and the desired time-scale factor into account to determine optimum alogrithm parameters. However, PAOLA has difficulties with certain waveform types and can result in poor synchronisation for subband implementations. SOLA is a less efficient algorithm but resolves the issues associated with PAOLA's implementation. The authors present an algorithm that is a combination of the two approaches that proves to be an efficient and effective algorithm for a subband implementation.

Time delay estimation in signal processing applications: an overview
(2002)
O'Dwyer, Aidan
Achomaireacht:
An extensive though scattered literature exists on the estimation of time delays in signal processing applications. However, it is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed. In addition, original work on gradient based time delay estimation is described.

Time dependent dielectric breakdown and stress induced leakage current characteristics of 8Å EOT HfO2 N-MOSFETS
(2010)
O'Connor, Robert; Hughes, Greg; Kauerauf, Thomas; Ragnarsson, Lars-Ake
Achomaireacht:
In this work we present the time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) characteristics of LaO capped HfO2 layers with an equivalent oxide thickness of 8Å. The layers show maximum operating voltages in excess of 1V. Such high reliability can be attributed to very high Weibull slopes. We examine the origin of the high slopes by a detailed study of the evolution of the stress induced leakage current with time, temperature and stress voltage.

Time Signature Detection by Using a Multi Resolution Audio Similarity Matrix
(2007)
Gainza, Mikel; Coyle, Eugene
Achomaireacht:

A method that estimates the time signature of a piece of music is presented. The approach exploits the repetitative structure of most music, where the same musical bar is repeated in different parts of a piece. The method utilised a multi-resolution audio similarity matrix approach, which allows comparisons between longer audio segments (bars) by combining comparisons of shorter segments (fraction of a note). The time signature method only depends on musical structure, and does not depend on the presence of percussive instruments or strong musical accents.

Biologically inspired genetic algorithm to minimize idle time of the assembly line balancing
(2011)
Razali, Noraini Mohd; Geraghty, John
Achomaireacht:
Assembly line balancing (ALB) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem in production and operations management area. Due to the NP-hard nature of the ALB problem, many attempts have been made to solve the problem efficiently. In this study, biologically inspired evolutionary computing tool which is genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to solve the ALB problem with the objective of minimizing the idle time in the workstation. The key issue in solving ALB is how to generate a feasible task sequence which does not violate the precedence constraints. This task sequencing is a vital work to be solved prior assigning tasks to workstation. In order to generate only feasible solution, a repairing strategy based topological sort is integrated in the GA procedure. The ALB test problems benchmarked from the literature are used in the study and the computational results show that the proposed approach is capable to obtain feasible solution with minimum idle time for a simple model assemb...

Achomaireacht:
Links between the gut microbiota and host metabolism have provided new perspectives on obesity. We previously showed that the link between the microbiota and fat deposition is age- and time-dependent subject to microbial adaptation to diet over time. We also demonstrated reduced weight gain in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice through manipulation of the gut microbiota with vancomycin or with the bacteriocin-producing probiotic Lactobacillus salivarius UCC118 (Bac+), with metabolic improvement achieved in DIO mice in receipt of vancomycin. However, two phases of weight gain were observed with effects most marked early in the intervention phase. Here, we compare the gut microbial populations at the early relative to the late stages of intervention using a high throughput sequencing-based analysis to understand the temporal relationship between the gut microbiota and obesity. This reveals several differences in microbiota composition over the intervening period. Vancomycin dramatically al...
